LAKE SHINJI (宍道湖)

For countless years Lake Shinji has, like clockwork, been a fresh or salt water body, depending on the time of day. The pulse of Matsue can be measured by the ebb and flow of the tide that surges up and down the Ohashi River. The nutrient-laden waters nurture bountiful marine life and this, in turn, is harvested to provide Matsue with a specialized local cuisine. Every morning one can watch fishermen with their long-handled baskets poling their way about the Ohashi River and pulling up their catch of shijimi shellfish, just as they have done for centuries.
Although presenting a glum, grey face on overcast days, Lake Shinji offers a beautiful show when the weather is fine; the sunset is spectacular. The sunset can seem unnaturally picture-postcard perfect when viewed over Yome-ga-shima, the small,tree-studded island near the Lake's eastern shore.

MATSUE OHASHI(松江大橋)

The Ohashi spans the distance that the Ohashi River creates between the younger and, at one time, aristocratic northern half of the city and Matsue's lively southern half with its roots as old as time itself.
A chilling tale is told of Gensuke, in the service of Matsue's first daimyo, who was buried deep in the riverbed under the bridge to appease the periodically violent river Kami. The turbulent tidal flows here at the estuary's bottleneck had proven the demise of many a half-completed bridge, hindering the daimyo's construction of Matsue Castle to the north. A small monument to the Spirit of this stabilizing "human pillar" is located to the right of the existing span's south footing.

THE SHIOMI NAWATE(塩見縄手)

In the Castle's gentle northern shadow, biside the wide and placid moat, a once-narrow track wends its way along a series of sober samurai estates fronted with walls capped with grey tile. Set along the quiet lane are the following points of interest.

LAFCADIO HEARN’S OLD RESIDENCE

(小泉八雲旧居)

                                     9:00a.m.~5:00p.m.                        Admission fee 250Yen

Here, in the three left-hand rooms and gardens of the Negishi home, Hearn spent his happiest months in Matsue. Conceiving and writing most of Glimpses of Unfamiliar Japan here as well as large portions of what was to become kwaidan, Hearn paid tribute to his dwelling in his writing. Most well known is the subject of his essay titled "In a Japanese Garden." While 100 years and countless visitors have left the garden somewhat less verdant than the ideal Hearn lovingly describes, its rivers of sand and aged flora still have a unique appeal.

THE LAFCADIO HEARN MEMORIAL MUSEUM(小泉八雲記念館)

Admission fee 300Yen

On display here are objects belonging or related to Lafcadio Hearn, one of the earliest and most prolific writers to reveal unfamiliar Japan to the west. Of particular note is Hearn's specially designed desk, built tall to bring his work nearer to his one good eye. Other items on display include his favorite quill and inkpot, as well as several favorites from his large Japanese pipe collection. The structure is also used by the Hearn Literary Society, "Yakumo- Kai".

Just off the Shiomi Track is the oldest of Matsue's two most famous teahouses. Commissioned in 1779 by Lord Fumai, the seventh Matsudaira-line daimyo and founder of the Fumai Style of Tea Ceremony, the teahouse was tended for many years by one of his closest retainers. Moved to its present site in 1966, Meimei-an is renowned for its thickly thatched roof.

MATSUE CASTLE(松江城)

Admission fee 550Yen

Towering above the city's younger, north sector is the structure that, since its completion in 1611,has become the city's best-known symbol. Built as a working fortress-watchtower, it gracefully stood vigilant under three generations of the founding Horio family, one generation of the Kyogoku, and ten generations of the Matsudaira clan before the Meiji Restoration freed it from its feudal obligations. Today, it is the only remaining castle in the San'in district.

Architecturally unique, the Castle's five-storied facade actually conceals six fighting floors. Unlike most castle foundations in Japan which are characterized by large, uniformly cut and fitted blocks, Matsue Castle sits atop a foundation comprised of irregular-sized stones placed with the smallest surface out and chocked into place with smaller rocks.
Situated with windows facing the four cardinal directions, the view from the top offers, weather permitting, a clear view of Matsue and environs. Not far from the Castle one can explore the Matsue Kyodo Kan, or regional museum, housed in a large, white, two-storied western-style structure built in 1903.
